Milk thistle is a flowering herb native to the Mediterranean region. For thousands of years, it has been believed to protect the liver and improve liver function.

Silymarin is extracted from milk thistle seeds and is its biologically active part, it is a mixture of flavonolignans, consisting of silybin, isosilybin, silybin, silybinin, etc. Silybin is the main active ingredient of silymarin and there are two diastereoisomers, silybin A and silybin B, in roughly equal molar ratios.
